フィリップ・G・アルトバック︵Philip G. Altbach、1941年 - ︶は、アメリカ合衆国の著述家、研究者。ボストンカレッジ元教授、同大学国際高等教育センター︵Center for International Higher Education︶創立者、所長。

学生時代

フィリップ・アルトバックは1941年にシカゴで生まれ、シカゴ大学で教育を受けた︵学士号1962年、修士号1963年、博士号1966年︶。1960年、大学新入生だったアルトバックは、ピースマークのボタンをイギリスからアメリカに輸入した。学生平和ユニオン︵SPU︶の代表としてイギリスに渡り現地の平和運動団体と面会したアルトバックは、米国に帰国した際に、SPUがピースマークを取り入れるよう説得したのである。

職歴

ハーバード大学社会関係学科の教育学講師、ポスドクフェロー︵1965-1967年︶、ウィスコンシン大学マディソン校の教育政策学科とインド研究学科の助教授︵1967-1975年︶、ニューヨーク州立大学︵SUNY︶バッファロー校の教育学研究科教育組織・行政・政策学科教授を歴任した。SUNYバッファロー校では、情報・図書館研究学科と社会学科の兼任教授も務めた。1994年、アルトバックはボストンカレッジに移籍し、国際高等教育センターを創立し、同大学J・ドナルド・モナン・SJ高等教育教授に就任した。

アルトバックは他にも次のポストを歴任してきた。カリフォルニア大学バークレー校高等教育研究センター客員研究員︵1981年︶、スタンフォード大学教育学科客員教授、同大学フーヴァー研究所客員上級研究員︵1988-1989年︶、カーネギー教育推進財団上級研究員︵1992-1996年︶、ボンベイ大学︵インド︶社会学科フルブライト研究教授︵1968年︶、シンガポールとマレーシアにおけるフルブライト上級研究員︵1983年︶。2006年から2007年にかけて、アルトバックはフルブライト新世紀学者プログラムの卓越研究リーダーを務めた。また、中国の北京大学と華中科技大学で客員教授に任命されている。1992年から2000年まで、ロックフェラー財団の支援を受け、ベラギオ出版ネットワークを創立・指揮し、アフリカでの書籍出版状況を改善するフォーラムの構築に尽力した。

アルトバックは次の学術雑誌の編集委員を務めてきた。﹃International Higher Education﹄編集委員︵1994年から現在まで︶、﹃American Education Research Journal﹄協力編集委員︵2008年から現在まで︶、﹃Comparative Education Review﹄編集委員︵1978–1988年︶、﹃Review of Higher Education﹄編集委員︵1996–2004年︶、﹃Higher Education﹄北米編集委員︵1976–1992年︶、﹃Educational Policy﹄創刊者・編集委員︵1985–2004年︶。

アルトバックは50冊以上の著作を執筆・編集しており、そのテーマは高等教育からインドの出版産業や学生アクティビズムにまで及ぶ。代表作として、﹃Turmoil and Transition: The International Imperative in Higher Education﹄、﹃Comparative Higher Education﹄、﹃Student Politics in America﹄がある。共編著には、﹃International Handbook of Higher Education﹄、﹃The Road to Academic Excellence: The Making of World-Class Research Universities﹄、﹃Leadership for World-Class Universities: Challenges for Developing Countries﹄、﹃World Class Worldwide: Transforming Research Universities in Asia and Latin America﹄がある。

アルトバックによる高等教育研究への貢献は広く認められている。
