Not a catalytic triad based enzyme!

[edit]

Papain hasn't got a catalytic triad action mechanism but, actually, a catalytic diad (if we can call this so). In fact the active aminoacid (Cys25) is "helped" only by the next-standing His159, which induce the deprotonation of Cys25 -SH, to make it more reactive. But residue 158 isn't Asn (it is Asp) and it can't participate to the action mechanism because it isn't in the right position (it is oriented in the wrong direction). Catalytic triad based mechanisms are mostly used in Ser-proteinases, while -SH group in tiol-proteinases like papain is nucleofilic enough to work with the presence of the sole His residue. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Cigo86 (talkcontribs) 11:44, 10 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Quote from FDA announcement

[edit]

It is not clear whether the FDA-quote under 'Action by the FDA to restrict marketing of all topical drug products containing papain' (which btw is a far too long subtitle in my opinion) encomprises the rest of the section or only one or two (or three) of the following paragraphs. Also, a reference to the FDA-announcement in question MUST BE ADDED to be in accordance with wiki-guidelines on referencing! Larsenbagvendt (talk) 13:18, 26 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. Although I'm not the one who did the original edit, I'm quite new to Wikipedia so I don't know how to add references; So if anyone can please take these sources and add them I'd be very happy (or supply a link on how it's done and I'll be happy to learn)

Cheers everyone :D - Squaredevil (talk) 16:45, 5 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Ok nevermind, I figured it out. I only edited the first two sentence of the paragraph; I have no idea about the rest of it, the sources cited (but with no ref) and the 'facts' stated. - Squaredevil (talk) 17:03, 5 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]
That whole section was copied and pasted from an FDA press release. Now, I'm told that fda.gov is in the public domain, so that's alright, but the original document is a press release so some work is still needed to wikify. Sorry again for the ugly template earlier, but sometimes it's what you need to attract the attention (for want of better words) of more well-informed editors. I intend to fix it, but then again I intend to fix a lot of things. Tomásdearg92 (talk) 01:48, 4 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Another use

[edit]

Anecdotally, papain (from the latex of an unripe papaya fruit) can be used to remove sea urchin spines stuck under the skin, possibly by breaking their structure down — Preceding unsigned comment added by 114.121.239.81 (talk) 17:04, 9 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]
