WikiProject X Newsletter • Issue 1

Hi! Thank you for subscribing to the WikiProject X Newsletter. For our first issue...

Has WikiProject X changed the world yet? No.

We opened up shop last month and announced our existence to the world. Our first phase is the "research" phase, consisting mostly of reading and listening. We set up our landing page and started collecting stories. So far, 28 stories have been shared about WikiProjects, describing a variety of experiences across numerous WikiProjects. A recurring story involves a WikiProject that starts off strong but has trouble continuing to stay active. Most people describe using WikiProjects as a way to get feedback from other editors. Some quotes:

Of course, these are just anecdotes. While they demonstrate what is possible, they do not necessarily explain what is typical. We will be using this information in conjunction with a quantitative analysis of WikiProjects, as documented on Meta. Particularly, we are interested in the measurement of WikiProject activity as it relates to overall editing in that WikiProject's subject area.

We also have 50 people and projects signed up for pilot testing, which is an excellent start! (An important caveat: one person volunteering a WikiProject does not mean the WikiProject as a whole is interested; just that there is at least one person, which is a start.)

While carrying out our research, we are documenting the problems with WikiProjects and our ideas for making WikiProjects better. Some ideas include better integration of existing tools into WikiProjects, recommendations of WikiProjects for people to join, and improved coordination with Articles for Creation. These are just ideas that may or may not make it to the design phase; we will see. We are also working with WikiProject Council to improve the directory of WikiProjects, with the goal of a reliable, self-updating WikiProject directory. Stay tuned! If you have any ideas, you are welcome to leave a note on our talk page.

That's all for now. Thank you for subscribing!

St. Seraphim of Sarov sharing his meal with a bear. St. Seraphim of Sarov lived as a hermit for 25 years.
Well, for a number of reasons. Contemplating mysteries - that's kind difficult if people are not left alone. Then some people like this kind of meditative type of life. Philosophers do that, they think better when not distracted. Some do that to practice very intricated spiritual excercises - both Buddists, Chritians and Muslims do that, and that's a lot of hard work, even if you can't notice anything from the outside. Hafspajen (talk) 16:26, 10 February 2015 (UTC)
And some do that for a greater good, like your hermit = "Acquire a peaceful spirit, and around you thousands will be saved." Hafspajen (talk) 16:28, 10 February 2015 (UTC)

Disambiguation link notification for February 14

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. Wikipedia appreciates your help. We noticed though that when you edited List of brand name snack foods, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Portion. Such links are almost always unintended, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of "Did you mean..." article titles. Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.

About your (non)participation in the January 2012 SOPA vote

Hi Northamerica1000. I am Piotr Konieczny (User:Piotrus), you may know me as an active content creator (see my userpage), but I am also a professional researcher of Wikipedia. Recently I published a paper (downloadable here) on reasons editors participated in Wikipedia's biggest vote to date (January 2012 WP:SOPA). I am now developing a supplementary paper, which analyzes why many editors did not take part in that vote. Which is where you come in :) You are a highly active Wikipedian (41st to be exact), and you were active back during the January 2012 discussion/voting for the SOPA, yet you did not chose to participate in said vote. I'd appreciate it if you could tell me why was that so? For your convenience, I prepared a short survey at meta, which should not take more than a minute of your time. I would dearly appreciate you taking this minute; not only as a Wikipedia researcher but as a fellow content creator and concerned member of the community (I believe your answers may help us eventually improve our policies and thus, the project's governance). PS. If you chose to reply here (on your userpage), please WP:ECHO me. Thank you! --Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus| reply here 16:51, 10 February 2015 (UTC)

  • Template:Valentine Greetings

    Hey bro,
I made it. Template:Valentine Greetings. Check it and hit it. Its just another copy of our seasonal greetings template with some trifles and web color magic.  - The Herald (here I am) 15:38, 9 February 2015 (UTC)

Now I am going to use AWB to sent out the greetings. The module is set and is working (with a little more fixes). But AWB uses categories for faster work and so is it advisable to create a category like this. If yes, under which cat will it fall? I have no mass-message mailing list, hence this tricks and magic.  - The Herald (here I am) 14:13, 10 February 2015 (UTC)

The Herald: Make sure to send me one...! I don't have any preliminary advice; seems like you know what you're doing, so be bold. NORTHAMERICA1000 14:30, 10 February 2015 (UTC)
No, I just wanna know that can I create such a category or not?  - The Herald (here I am) 14:47, 10 February 2015 (UTC)
The Herald: Should be all right, in my humble opinion. WP:USERNOCAT has no stipulation against what you are looking to accomplish. Also, as an example, I maintain a mailing list at User:Northamerica1000/Mailing list, which is similar to what you're looking to create. NORTHAMERICA1000 14:59, 10 February 2015 (UTC)
Well, I have seen your page, but that needs mass-message right to compile.  - T H (here I am) 15:24, 10 February 2015 (UTC)
The Herald: I appreciate your insistence to keep things on the up-and-up. In my opinion, I don't forsee anyone challenging the page you're looking to create, and I admire your creativity. You should provide a notice somewhere in your message with a link to your cat page, with an opt-out option for people to remove their name if they choose. If you only send it to friends, it's possible that nobody will actually opt-out. This could be in fine (small) print at the end of the template you're looking to send, in your signature area, etc. NORTHAMERICA1000 15:37, 10 February 2015 (UTC)
Like Technical 13 once had it. Well, now I think User:The Herald/Mailing List is better because I need to use HotCat first to link my friends' user talk and then go to AWB and then have all of it messed up. So now I am going for MediaWiki or some other alternate. Anyway, you are the one whom I will test it first. So be ready..  - T H (here I am) 15:41, 10 February 2015 (UTC)
No worries, and feel free to use my talk page to test it out. NORTHAMERICA1000 15:46, 10 February 2015 (UTC)
    Its ready!!And working too!!  - T H (here I am) 12:17, 11 February 2015 (UTC)

    No consensus?

    • I would have been more impressed if Cryptic could tell that how that AfD misrepresented any of the policy. Cryptic, can you? OccultZone (TalkContributionsLog) 15:18, 11 February 2015 (UTC)
      • Just redirecting would have been faster and easier, yes, but there's no misrepresentation going on here. Deletion doesn't preclude mention in the artists' articles when there isn't any merger; there was nothing reasonably worth merging; disambiguated article titles make for miserably poor redirects; and there's a question of which of the two artist's articles to redirect to. And as long as we're in wikilawyer mode, it's not a policy. —Cryptic 15:29, 11 February 2015 (UTC)
Thanks NA1000. sorry to stir up a hornet's nest here. The Dissident Aggressor 12:43, 12 February 2015 (UTC)

Redundant NFU rationale on one of your uploaded images

Well, you undo-ed my edit. In case you hadn't noticed, {{Non-free use rationale}} and {{Non-free use rationale 2}} are essentially the same thing. The latter is used when the uploader uses the File Upload Wizard. And using the transclusion count, we understand how many non-free images were uploaded through FUW. Well, since you already have one rationale, I don't know why you should put another one, it's redundant. Hope, I could clarify. ;) --QEDKTC 11:40, 15 February 2015 (UTC)

Hello, I would like to get the content for Charles LaDuca restored and keep it up. What can I do? Can I start over in such a way that it does not get removed? I don't really understand why it was removed in the first place. I can see peoples comments but don't see how the page even looked when they were commenting. Please advise what is proper procedure in this situation? Thank You very much. Hello, Northamerica1000. You have new messages at Talk:Danish pastry.

    • North, WHERE ARE you? An experienced food editor is needed asap at the Danish pastry to clear up the mess... We need an experienced food editor - somebody who can give a clear and concise overview of the subject and keep a cool head. Hafspajen (talk) 06:43, 17 February 2015 (UTC)
    Danish pastries feed the masses
    • HiHafspajen: I may opine there eventually, and it's possible I may not. With three new relatively detailed/long discussion threads on the article's talk page this month, there's a lot to sift through, and I'm presently working in several other areas. As per the discussion there, a new Pastry of Denmark article could be created, although I feel that this title would be best used to summarize all pastries from Denmark, rather than one.
For what it's worth, and as a side note, in contemporary times in the U.S., a "Danish" pastry is arguably a generic term for several types of pastries, which may differ from the original Danish pastry from Denmark. In my opinion, it's best to base the article upon the original Danish pastry, and include other types in the Varieties or other possible new section(s). NORTHAMERICA1000 13:10, 17 February 2015 (UTC)
How do the US pastry look like, that's what I would like to know. Hafspajen (talk) 13:12, 17 February 2015 (UTC)
The problem is that it is different even among the Scandinavian countries. This is about how it looks [www.lantmannen-unibake.com/Global/.../Butiksbakat] in Sweden. It is called Wienerbrød [12] [13] in Norway. In Finland is called viineri [14] and looks like this. In Denmark they have several types. How does US Danish look like? Hafspajen (talk) 13:15, 17 February 2015 (UTC)
Hafspajen: I hesitate to provide a definitive answer without performing adequate research, but here are some book links that provide more information:
Very interesting. Nr 7 gives me that the classic filling is remonce. Hafspajen (talk) 14:48, 17 February 2015 (UTC)
New it was going to ***. They draged it to ANI. Hafspajen (talk) 23:07, 17 February 2015 (UTC)
North, I was thinking about this and I think that my cake-editorship ends here. You very kindly encouraged me and expressed support for my continued editing of cake articles, asked me to create more of them, but after this Danish pastry-experience - I will never edit any cake articles again. Appart from the fact that the wienerbröd (and a red link as you see) - the Swedish variety of this pastry - has indeed a huge cultural significance for us, Swedes, as a part of our variety of the the afternoon tea ceremony -Fika (coffee break) - something that other editors didn't understood - looks like everybody (incuding Floquenbeam and EdJohnston) thinks that we are all out of our minds. It might have been a culture shock - related issue, but this from now on will prevent me to enter cake territory again. I created one article, failed to make a point on an other, has been declared disruptve - and this is not my cup of tea. Never knew desserts make people react like this. I am very sorry but I will not create thos articles that I promised I will. I kinda agree with Floquenbeam comment here telling to one of the Danish pastry editors - I don't think interacting with you further would be of any use whatsoever; - I agree with him there. Hafspajen (talk) 12:02, 18 February 2015 (UTC)

Do what you feel is best for yourself. However, I wouldn't extrapolate the situation that has occurred in re Danish pastry as likely to occur regarding all food articles. Actually, most food topics on Wikipedia are seriously lacking editors to expand and maintain present articles and create new ones. NORTHAMERICA1000 14:14, 18 February 2015 (UTC)

    Thank you!

Good morning! (at least it is morning where I am in Southern California). I wanted to first and foremost thank you for your numerous copyedits on pages I had recently worked on. Always great to have someone double check me and clean up my stupid typos. :-p I also wanted to talk with you and get your input about something. I noticed that you added a couple of lists to the US state fire department navigational boxes, such as the List of New York fire departments. I didn't realize that these lists existed so thanks for pointing them out! I'm curious whether you think these lists still serve a purpose. In my opinion these lists should really be deleted because they will never be complete. I was thinking of having them simply redirect to the state category, so for example List of New York fire departments would redirect to Category:Fire departments in New York since this category basically automatically updates.

I am still relatively new and learning the ways of Wikipedia. Thanks for your assistance! Your colleague, --Zackmann08 (talk) 16:31, 20 February 2015 (UTC)

HiZackmann08: The lists can include content that categories cannot, such as descriptions, images, references, external links, etc. For more information about lists relative to categories see WP:NOTDUP. Also, categories often don't receive many page views, and hence aren't used much. For example, see (check views), but ignore the most recent figures on the bar graph, which are skewed per the page views I have done there today. NORTHAMERICA1000 18:04, 20 February 2015 (UTC)
Ah good points! Thank you for pointing that out. :-) --Zackmann08 (talk) 18:06, 20 February 2015 (UTC)

A strange page move caused a AFD to go away it seems

So I marked this Martin Hristov (footballer, born 1997) as a duplicate article of a article that is up for a afd Hristov Martin. Instead of the user participating in this he just moved all of this and now the AFD is kind of messed up looking now. Not sure what to say. Wgolf (talk) 23:25, 21 February 2015 (UTC)

-Looks like it was fixed! Wgolf (talk) 23:41, 21 February 2015 (UTC)
HiWgolf. Yes, everything appears to be in order at this time for the most part. Martin Hristov (footballer, born 1997) (with the comma) now redirects to Martin Hristov (footballer born 1997), which was handled by Cryptic (diff). At the AfD discussion, Cryptic provided notes about some differences between the versions, with the redirected article perhaps needing more content merged to the redirect target. This week's article for improvement (week 9, 2015)

Trailer Trash is a US derogatory term for poor people living in trailersorcaravans. It appears that these trailer trash happen to live on a trailer park.

    Hello, Northamerica1000.

The following is WikiProject Today's articles for improvement's weekly selection:

    TfD

NA, I think you're pretty clever and geeky. Can you have a look at Wikipedia:Administrators'_noticeboard/Requests_for_closure#Wikipedia:Templates_for_discussion.2FLog.2F2014_November_29?Wikipedia:Templates_for_discussion/Log/2014_November_29#Template:Grey_line looks like no consensus, Wikipedia:Templates_for_discussion/Log/2014_November_29#Template:Infobox_Electoral_reform is a pretty clear delete. Wikipedia:Templates_for_discussion/Log/2014_November_29#Template:Infobox_gunpowder_plotter is tricky, probably no consensus, and God only knows what Wikipedia:Templates_for_discussion/Log/2014_November_29#Template:Quotation results in. I'd ask Plastikspork but they're on the Bahamas, I think, and I'd do some myself but I don't know the process. Wikipedia:Administrators' noticeboard/Requests for closure is a bit backlogged and poor Cunard is running out of coffee and carbohydrates, I fear. Drmies (talk) 17:51, 23 February 2015 (UTC)

HiDrmies: I'll keep the suggestions in mind. I have a pretty full plate with various present and planned activities, so I may not get to these. One person can only do so much, and I don't want to burn out by trying to cover to many things at once. NORTHAMERICA1000 20:48, 23 February 2015 (UTC)
If you know anyone else with some relevant skills, ask them please--it would make for nice cleanup. I wish that the TfD process were automated, like AfD. Drmies (talk) 20:49, 23 February 2015 (UTC)

Hi Northamerica1000. You added sources to and de-prodded American Sandwich: Great Eats from All 50 States, which is now at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/American Sandwich: Great Eats from All 50 States. Cunard (talk) 20:40, 24 February 2015 (UTC)
