Feedback needed at Mfecane talk page[edit]

Hello everyone! I've been preparing for a re-write of the Mfecane article and would really appreciate some feedback at the talk page. Thanks in advance! Pliny the Elderberry (talk) 18:54, 9 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

AfroCreatives WikiProject: Back and better[edit]

Fellow Wikimedians,

I hope this meets you well.

After a quiet period since the 2022 launch of AfroCreatives WikiProject (ACWP), The Africa Narrative (TAN) is gearing up for a busy 2024 with the roll-out of a series of initiatives as well as a robust buildout of the ACWP activities.  First up on the calendar of 2024 Edit-a-thons is a pan-African campaign in partnership with The Panafrican Film and Television Festival of Ouagadougou (French: Festival panafricain du cinéma et de la télévision de Ouagadougou, FESPACO), the continent’s largest film festival, and the African Federation of Film Critics (AFFC, French: Fédération africaine de la critique cinématographique, FACC), a panafricanist federation of African and diaspora film critics.

These partnerships are aimed at mobilizing African film and television industry stakeholders to learn how the Wikimedia space works and how they can help bridge the content gap that exists on the digital space about African film and television through Wikimedia projects. Industry stakeholders include the gamut of creatives and professionals—actors, screenwriters, cinematographers, directors, producers, executives, film critics, among many others—who can bring their industry knowledge to improving Wikipedia articles.

In addition, given the vital role of images in enhancing Wikipedia, ACWP+film  is launching a special effort timed to the FESPACO edit-a-thon to encourage industry figures to contribute images such as posters, film stills, behind-the-scenes, film festivals, awards, etc) to Wikimedia Commons. An early test effort made to some award-winning African filmmakers in 2022 reflected strong support and ACWP expects the launch of this concerted effort to bring notable additions to African film and television imagery.

All these contributions helpfully complement the work of the African Wikimedia communities who are contributing in the same or adjoining space.

One of the ideas birthed in 2022 on the heels of the first ACWP+film campaign, was the  creation of  African film and television portals, thoughtfully curated and tailored for English, French and Arabic Wikipedia.

The goals are broadly two-fold:

  1. To generate greater visibility and awareness for African film and television among a global audience as well as further engagement on Wikipedia, and
  2. To generate further enthusiasm, pride, and ultimately, more engagement among the African community contributors in the area of African film.  The Content on these portals is manually curated twice a month.

The Portals were launched on the 18th of April 2024, with manually curated content posted every two weeks.

The 2024 ACWP+film campaign will officially launch on 18th May 2024 and run through 1st June 2024. However, the series of film specific training sessions on Wikipedia, Wikidata and Wikimedia Commons will start on 3rd May.

In addition to general editing guidelines, the training modules include film-and-television specific insights on how to document film on Wikipedia with important elements that are frequently lacking. These include film and television specific infoboxes, filmography tables, linking to external film databases, how to document film subjects on Wikidata, among others.

All of this points to what we expect to be an immensely productive and rewarding campaign. So, sit back, relax, and look out for the communications about the campaign launch in due time! Ceslause (talk) 09:45, 22 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Need help with creating a consensus[edit]

About 2 months ago, I made an RFC at Talk:Somalia#Somalia showed as controlling Somaliland. After a slow RFC after which the opinion remained split, nothing happened. Owing to a recent edit war regarding the image, I am posting this here for further input so this issue can be put to bed. Fantastic Mr. Fox (talk) 20:51, 26 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Using sources in French[edit]

Hello, not sure I have time for this but.... I was reading French Wikipedia on Agbéyomé Kodjo, an ex-Prime Minister of the Togo who has recently died. French Wikipedia and another source do not match exactly what's on his page here in English. Particularly the fact that the English page mentions one former president, but there are 2 by that name, a father and son. What I find in English is very badly translated and possibly from an African language, not French. Just wondering. I posted something on the particular page's talk, but as near as I can tell, it has only been created by a bot. RoseSuna (talk) 02:12, 2 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I'll add it to my watch list and look at the corresponding French article later, probably in the next few days. First time come across this article. Tamsier (talk) 07:45, 2 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

reported copyvio[edit]

Hi, a user marked copyvios on Phoenician settlement of North Africa, could someone please review the article and address any potential copyright violations? Thank you! I also left a note on other WikiProjects tagged on the article's talk page. 82.169.19.7 (talk) 12:16, 3 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Starting this July, we will see a new contest on the scene - the Developing Countries WikiContest (WP:DCWC)! Think of it as a WikiCup but only for articles and media on developing countries.

Competitors may submit GAs, GTs, FAs, FTs, FLs, FPs, and DYK and ITN entries from/on developing countries to gain points and proceed to further rounds. Points are also awarded to those who review GAs, FAs and FLs.

All articles on African topics are admissible for this contest, since nearly all African countries are listed as developing countries. Indeed, Africa has many least-developed countries, and contest submissions from these countries will get a multiplier in points. I encourage everyone here to sign up and compete with editors from around the world to create high-quality content!

Append your name to the DCWC signup page today!

Best wishes, Wilhelm Tell DCCXLVI (talk to me!/my edits) 18:11, 18 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Yasuke has an RfC[edit]

Yasuke, which is within the scope of this WikiProject, has an RfC for possible consensus. A discussion is taking place. If you would like to participate in the discussion, you are invited to add your comments on the discussion page. Thank you. RomeshKubajali (talk) 23:20, 21 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

University of Burundi new digitized documents and catalogue[edit]

Hello! I’ve been in touch with Paul Gatavu, the librarian at the University of Burundi in Bujumbura. They’ve been digitizing loads of material, including theses, dissertations, papers and reviews, and they can be searched and accessed freely, with fulltext search, here!

You can read about the digitization project here. Zanahary (talk) 13:52, 3 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for this, this is great news. -Indy beetle (talk) 14:07, 3 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
It's amazing! The vastest majority of this stuff hasn't ever been digitized at all before. It's an amazing project, especially at a university so underfunded as UB. Zanahary (talk) 14:12, 3 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Talk:United States has an RfC. If you would like to participate in the discussion, you are invited to add your comments on the discussion page. The previous one was closed due to it being too combative and not inducive to discussion. Thank you. Alexanderkowal (talk) 09:01, 9 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Would love to see more editors participating in this challenge on a diversity of topics and countries! ♦ Dr. Blofeld 14:37, 18 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
