City/State:
College Park, MD 20742
In honor of Women's History Month, the University of Maryland Art Gallery, Michelle Smith Collaboratory for Visual Culture is hosting a public Art+Feminism Wikipedia Edit-a-thon. The event will focus on improving Wikipedia entries related to notable women artists and art world figures. Snacks provided.
Who: Anyone with a laptop! No advanced technical skills required! While all participants of all genders are welcome to sign up, this event is focused on encouraging women editors.
What to bring: Laptop computer
Where: Michelle Smith Collaboratory for Visual Culture (also virtual)
From 10 am to 1 pm, please feel free to drop in to the Michelle Smith Collaboratory, where we will be focusing on creating new articles and improving existing biographies of women artists whose work is found in one of three collections at the University of Maryland: The Art Gallery, Stamp Student Union, and the Driskell Center. All are welcome, and your contributions are highly valued.
Do I need to have any Wikipedia experience to participate? No experience required! However, you may wish to register a user account on Wikipedia in advance of the event.
Do I need to have extensive knowledge on visual arts? Nope! You will be finding information about the artists through our resources. The important thing is knowing how to choose a good source to get your information from.
Volunteers should feel free to add the names of notable women in the arts who need a better Wikipedia presence, especially ones represented by works in one of three permanent collections on the University of Maryland campus: University of Maryland Art Gallery, Contemporary Art Purchasing Program (CAPP) collection of the Adele H. Stamp Student Union, and David C. Driskell Center. The list provides a starting point for work by edit-a-thon participants, either by researching and writing new articles (biographies) or expanding and improving existing articles (biographies) of women on this list. If you are not sure where to start, don't hesitate to ask for help! Please add the #ArtAndFeminism tag to all edits on Wikipedia made for this event.

List of Women Artists in UMD Collections in need of new articles or improvement/expansion to existing articles[edit]
Last year (2021) we edited at least 3 new bios and a couple of ones in need of improvement. Let's do more this year!In addition to our normal list of women artists with work in UMD collections, this year (2022) we are focusing on women artists from the west coast Bay area without entries or with entries in need of some TLC! (thanks to Melissa San Miguel for compiling this list)
