ジョン・ミルトン︵John Milton, 1608年12月9日 - 1674年11月8日から11月10日の間[1]︶は、イングランド︵イギリス︶の詩人。共和派の運動家であり、オリバー・クロムウェルを支持した。
代表作﹃失楽園﹄は、ダンテ﹃神曲﹄やアリオスト﹃狂えるオルランド﹄と並ぶルネサンス期の長編叙事詩の名作である。
生涯[編集]
作曲家のジョン・ミルトン︵John Milton︶と彼の妻のサラ・ジェフリーの息子として生まれた。1625年、ケンブリッジ大学クライストカレッジに入学。同年チャールズ1世が即位。学生仲間の間での評判はあまりよくなかった。1629年、学士号取得。1632年修士号取得。 1634年、戯曲﹃コマス﹄(Comus) が上演される。1637年、﹃コマス﹄が出版される。母親死亡。1638年-1639年イタリアを周遊。1642年結婚。清教徒革命時に教会改革論や言論の自由を論じた﹃言論・出版の自由 アレオパジティカ﹄ (Areopagitica)を発表 (1644年)。政府のラテン語秘書として共和制を弁護。1649年チャールズ1世が処刑される。1652年に過労で失明[2]。王政復古後は詩作に没頭。 1658年、﹃失楽園﹄の制作に着手する。1674年没。作品[編集]
