ケアラダクティルス ︵学名‥Cearadactylus ︶は、南米・ブラジルのロムアルド累層 (Romualdo Formation) から産出した翼指竜亜目アンハングエラ科の大型翼竜。セアラダクティルスと表記されることもある。ケアラダクティルス化石の年代はおよそ 112 Ma︵Ma‥百万年前︶前期白亜紀のアルビアン期と推定されている。唯一の種 C. atrox は1985年に Giuseppe Leonardi と Guido Borgomanero によって記載・命名された。属名はブラジルのセアラ州 (Ceará) に由来し、これとギリシャ語で﹁指﹂を意味する "δάκτυλος" (daktylos) を組み合わせて﹁セアラの指﹂という意味である^[1]。種小名 atrox はラテン語で﹁恐ろしい﹂を意味し、この動物の恐ろしげな歯列を反映している。

発見[編集]

ケアラダクティルスの模式標本 MN 7019-V︵旧番号 CB-PV-F-O93︶はブラジル北東部アラリペ台地のサンタナ層群 (Santana Group) のロムアルド累層から発見された。模式標本は長さ 57 cm の頭骨一つからなっている^[2]。これは1983年にイタリアに持ち込まれ、Borgomanero が購入して自分のコレクションに加えた。この頭骨は破損の程度が特に頭頂部において大きく、おそらくは化石商による復元が行われている。

後のブラジル国立博物館によるプレパレーション︵クリーニングなどの保存作業︶で判明したことだが、当初のプレパレーションには多くの深刻な失敗が含まれていた。吻端と下顎先端が取り違えられていたことから、頭部前半部は上下逆の復元となっていた。歯は大規模に修復されて大型化され、幅広くなった上下顎先端から非常に大きく頑強な歯が外に向けて突きだし、一種の﹁ロゼット﹂を形成していた。この折れ曲がった上顎と噛み合う歯から魚食性であることが推測され、滑りやすい魚を保持するのに用いられていた。トサカはなかったと考えられた。新しいプレパレーションにより、吻にはトサカがありロゼットはだいぶ小さかったことが明らかとなった。また、詳細が多数明らかとなり、ケアラダクティルスの系統上の位置を決定するのに役立った^[3]。 1993年、Fabio Marco Dalla Vecchia が第2の種 Cearadactylus ligabuei を命名した。種小名はヴェネツィアの Centro Studi Ricerche Ligabue 所長を勤める Giancarlo Ligabue への献名である。この種は標本 CCSRL 12692/12713 を模式標本としており、これもまた激しく損傷した 403 mm 長の頭骨である。この頭骨は2つの部分からなっており、前部と後部が化石商によって接着されていた。前部と後部が同一個体の物なのか︵それどころか同じ種の物なのか︶は不確実である。Dalla Vecchia 自身はこの種が本当にケアラダクティルス属に属するのかについて確信は持っていなかったが、その頭骨は独自の属を設立するほどの特異性を持ってはいない一方で既知の種に属させるには差異が大きすぎ、そのため彼は最も似た属の新種とした。その後、Dalla Vecchia 等はこのタクソンがケアラダクティルス属に属するとした同定を一貫して否定している。 Dalla Vecchia は "C". ligabuei の翼幅を 6 m と見積もったが、ケルナーは "C". ligabuei の頭骨が最大翼幅 5 m と推定されている C. atrox の模式標本頭骨よりも大きくはないことを指摘した。ケルナーはこれはおそらくアンハングエラ科 (Anhangueridae) であるとの結論を出し、アンウィンは2002年に本種をアンハングエラ属の一種 ( Anhanguera ligabuei ) であるとした^[4]。2005年、Steel 等はこの種がコロボリンクス属の一種 ( Coloborhynchus ligabuei ) ではないかと推測した^[5]。

ケアラダクティルスの翼福はおよそ 4 m で^[6]体重は 15 kg ほどであると記載者によって推定されている^[2]。ペーター・ヴェルンホファーは1991年に翼幅を 5.5 m と推定した^[7^]^[1]。

分類[編集]

記載者の Leonardi は本属を特定の科に含めることをあえてしなかった。ヴェルンホファーはこの属のためにケアラダクティルス科 (Cearadactylidae) を創設したが、これは今では用いられていない。2000年、アレクサンダー・ケルナーは Pteranodontoidea (sensu Kellner) の中のアンハングエラ科に近縁︵ただしトサカを欠いているので一員ではない︶であると結論づけた。しかし2002年にデイヴィッド・アンウィン (David Unwin) はこの属は非常に特殊化したクテノカスマ科 (Ctenochasmatidae) であるとの主張を展開した^[4]。2010年、ケルナーは3つの翼竜特徴データベースに新情報を加えた上で、分岐分析によって系統樹中のケアラダクティルスの位置を算出した。3つの結果はそれぞれ異なっていたが、ケアラダクティルスをアンハングエラ科に近縁とする点では共通していた。2012年、Pereda-Suberbiola 等はケアラダクティルスを Ctenochasmatoidea の中に置き、グナトサウルスや Ardeadactylus︵分析の中では Pterodactylus longicolum として扱われている︶などと共に多分岐 (polytomy) を構成しているとした^[8]。しかしその後に行われた分析ではケアラダクティルスは Anhangueria の一員であるとされ、また別の複数の分析ではケアラダクティルスはより派生的な位置に置かれたり基盤的な位置に置かれたりした^[^9]^[10]^[11]。Pentland 等による2019年の系統分析を例に挙げると、ケアラダクティルスは Anhangueria の派生的位置、Ornithocheirae のすぐ外側に置かれた︵彼らの定義による Ornithocheirae は、オルニトケイルス科 "Ornithocheiridae" とアンハングエラ科 "Anhangueridae" を含むクレードである︶。彼らによるクラドグラムを図.1 に示す^[11]。それに対し別の研究では、ケアラダクティルスをアンハングエラ科の一員であるとし、もっと具体的にはアンハングエラ亜科に属し Maaradactylus と姉妹群を形成しているとした^[12]^[13]^[14]^[15]。図.2 のクラドグラムは2020年に Borja Holgado と Rodrigo Pêgas によって発表された物である^[1^6]。 図.1: Pentland et al.
