超自然

超自然︵ちょうしぜん、ラテン語: supernātūrālis︶とは、自然界の法則を超えたこと、科学教育では説明のつかない神秘的なものごと^[1]。元のラテン語は、supraスープラ︵＝　～を超えた︶+ naturalis ナートゥーラーリス︵＝自然︶という構成になっている。この語は15世紀中葉に、副詞的に用いれていたことが確認されており、自然を超えたより高い領域で、という意味であった^[2]。現代英語では形容詞的にはsupernatural、名詞的にはthe supernaturalとされる。スコラ哲学などでも超自然に関して考察が行われた。説明のつかない事象の存在を認め、これを超自然的な力や神の啓示や奇跡などによって説明しようとする立場のことは超自然主義とも言う。フィクションにおいて超自然が主題となるジャンルを﹁超自然的フィクション﹂と呼ぶ。
