カーマ︵サンスクリット語/パーリ語: Kāma︶とは、ヒンドゥー文献において欲求、欲望を意味する言葉である[2]。カーマは、欲望、性欲、情熱、憧れ、感覚への喜び、耽美的生き方、愛などを指し、現代的な例を挙げるなら、テレビゲームの長時間プレー、喫煙への欲求、成功への欲求などを指すであろう[3][4]。
カーマはヒンドゥー教における、人生の4つの目的の1つである[5]。ダルマ︵道徳、倫理︶、アルタ︵富、財産、生計︶とモークシャ︵輪廻からの解放︶といった、他の3つの目標を犠牲にすることなく満たされたならば、本質的で健康的な人生を送れるであろうとされている[6][7]。これら4つの目標はプルシャールタ︵Puruṣārtha︶と呼ばれている[8]。

仏教のパーリ経典においては、釈迦は五感で得られる欲望の放棄 (離欲, ネッカンマ、nekkhamma)こそが悟り︵ボーディ︶への道だと説いた[9]。離欲は八正道のうち正思惟の一つである。
多くの仏教徒は、五戒を守ることを日課とし、それにはパートナー以外との性交渉を避ける不邪婬戒(kāmesu micchācārā veramaṇī sikkhāpada) が含まれる[10]。
欲愛[編集]
欲愛︵巴: kāmacchanda︶とは、貪欲、欲貪、欲欲とも訳され、五根からの欲︵Kāma︶の情報を欲する・恋しがる︵chanda︶こと[11]。五下分結のひとつである。 欲愛は解脱を妨げるものであるため、五蓋のひとつとして欲愛蓋︵kāmacchandanīvaraṇa︶が挙げられる[11]。脚注[編集]
